The mountain views in Sapa (when the mist clears) are absolutely stunning. Chill out, enjoy the tranquil scenery and fresh air over a cup of coffee and french pastry; rough it out, hiking along muddy trails through beautiful terraced padi fields; or better still, do BOTH!
It was an eye-opener to vist the local traditional villages to see first-hand how a predominently agrarian subsistence society lead their lives. The locals are entirely self-sufficient, growing their own food and making their own garments (which they try to sell to tourists). Each tribe wear their distinct colours. The most common tribe encountered in Sapa are the Black Hmong, who are decked out in indigo.
This former french holiday resort town still shows remnants of the french influence with several cafes serving excellent french pastries and desserts. When it gets too wet to go outdoors, it's ideal to read a good book at one of these cafes while sampling the wonderful food.
