Getting TO/AROUND: I found that New york taxis were very inexpensive, there are loads of them around and they're easy to use. the cost was $2.50 initial rate & 40cents for every 1/5 mile (which is roughly 4blocks down town or 1 block across) or 120secs in traffic. In addition to this there is a surcharge of $1 extra on weekdays between 4-8pm and a 50cent extra at night midnight - 6am. Taxi charge a flat rate of $45 form JFK to anywhere in Manhattan but beware that this isn't the case going back to JFK as your put on the meter and would cost you around $55 - $65. they can be hard to get hold of during evening rush hour and even if you do see one they may tend to favour picking up guys in suits as they may get a better tip.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Subway is probably the best wat to get round Manhattan, its very cheap, easy to use and covers the whole city. Some say it can be dangerous at night but i think it all depends who your with and how big your group size is but I probably wouldn't feel to safe riding it alone at night but in the day time its fine. single fare are $2 but they do have very good value travel cards which are worth getting. 1 day unlimited travel pass is $7 7 day unlimited travel pass is $24 The cost to JFK is $6 you'll have to pay at the booth for this(you may think why pay $6 when a single ride is $2 but you have to catch the skytrain at JFK subway station which costs $5 on its own)
