18 hours at chincoteague nwr: dodging the rain, cursing the overcast skies, and searching for critters

48 hours in and around albuquerque

we reveled in the crisp autumn days, where the cooler temperatures were transforming the aspen leaves into a buttery yellow. We explored Albuquerque proper briefly before embarking on a wandering drive with stops at Petroglyphs National Monument, Jemez Mountain Trail, Bandelier National Monument, and finally Sandia Peak.

we traveled by car and ferry along narrow mountain roads, rocky peninsulas, and winding plains, with stops in hania, kastelli, akrotiri peninsula, aptera, knossos, the messara plain, and loutro (plus the obligatory layover in athens).

little do we know that our room faces toward the hotel's expansive gardens. At night, the view from our window was a wall of utter darkness. We peek out in the morning and are shocked to see a riot of foliage and brilliant tropical blooms.

road trip portugal: 11 days, 630 miles and 6 stops (and much port)

we traveled by foot, train, car, trolley, and riverboat. we avoided the algarve, but stopped in lisbon, sintra, conimbriga, oporto, douro valley, marvao (near spain), and evora.

in the douro, we are swept into another landscape, another portugal. the gentle hills are demarcated by line after line of vines, swollen with grapes ready for the harvest. this is port in the making . . . (read more)

we traveled by car and by foot, with stops in new delhi, old delhi, sikadra, agra, bharatpur, and jaipur.

9 days in eire, from east to west and back again in september 2003

we traveled by train, foot, and ferry, with stops in dublin, wexford, laragh/glendalough, limerick, galway city, galway, and inishmore (aran islands).

then we slip and slide straight up Mullacor Mountain to the windy, treeless summit. A fine reward awaits us on the far side of the mountain ý a deep green valley, two lakes, and the monastic ruins of Glendalough . . . (read more)
