Ephesus

by terrycowan - last update: May 3, 2005

I have been to Ephesus twice--in 2003 and in 2004. If you are interested in Greco-Roman ruins, then Ephesus is an essentail stopover. I retain two images of Ephesus. One is standing near the top of the amphitheater, looking down Harbor Street towards the old harbor (now silted in)--an incredible sight! This was where the incident associated with St. Paul (in either Acts 17 or 18) occurred. The other was viewing a simple sidewalk. The sidewalk contained intricate mosaic artwork. I was impressed with just how much the ancients wanted beauty in their lives--so much so that even their sidewalks were works of art.
Expect crowds in Ephesus. The cruise ships put in at nearby Kupadasi and busloads of noisy tourists converge on Ephesus. Many don't appear to be particularly interested--perhaps wishing they were back at the pool or bar. This is the only downside I saw to visiting Ephesus.
