I have been to Ephesus twice--in 2003 and in 2004. If you are interested in Greco-Roman ruins, then Ephesus is an essentail stopover. I retain two images of Ephesus. One is standing near the top of the amphitheater, looking down Harbor Street towards the old harbor (now silted in)--an incredible sight! This was where the incident associated with St. Paul (in either Acts 17 or 18) occurred. The other was viewing a simple sidewalk. The sidewalk contained intricate mosaic artwork. I was impressed with just how much the ancients wanted beauty in their lives--so much so that even their sidewalks were works of art. |
Expect crowds in Ephesus. The cruise ships put in at nearby Kupadasi and busloads of noisy tourists converge on Ephesus. Many don't appear to be particularly interested--perhaps wishing they were back at the pool or bar. This is the only downside I saw to visiting Ephesus. |
