Van (pronounced "Whon")

by terrycowan - last update: Nov 17, 2006

I spent 2 nights in Van, but did not get to see all that I wished to in the area. Van is a modern, bustling city, though not particularly a tourist destination in itself. But its setting on the shores of Lake Van is spectacular! I particularly wanted to visit Akdamar Island and see some of the other scattered Armenian ruins in the area. A medical emergency with one of my traveling companions dictated that we spend much of our time at the Van Airport instead. Though small, the airport is very modern and easy to use. Apparently there are 3 airlines that service Van, each with 1 flight a day. And they fill up quickly! I did get to see Akdamar Island, and that was worth a trip in and of itself.
