Haghpat Monastery

by terrycowan - last update: Jul 10, 2006

I visited Haghpat Monastery on a day-trip from Tbilisi. It was an easy drive from Tbilisi, but it took a full 2 hours to pass customs at the Georgia/Armenia border. Count on delays here. The views from Haghpat are incredible. And the monastery complex itself has a unique charm. While the church is still functioning, with an altar in place, it also almost has the feel of an abandoned ruin. The windows are all open and pigeons and swallows seem as much at home inside as people. The whole scene is a little surreal at times. I definitely recommend a visit here.
