The Famous Silver Bridge accident..Mothman!!! | Noel & Tiffany near the site of original Bridge |
The original Silver Bridge collapsed in the mid 1960's..it was a 700-foot high bridge that fell and killed many.
In the 1960's there were numerous reports of a mysterious creature that was eventually named the "MOTHMAN". First sighted near route 2 of what was once the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk's hunting grounds. The MOTHMAN is said to look like a man but closer views revealed a much larger creature with functional wings. The wings unfolded from the back and extend the width of the road. Witnesses reported the creature traveling at speeds over 100 mph during encounters which involved vehicles. The MOTHMAN was later spotted many times in Point Pleasant area. It is described being gray and standing 6-7 feet tall with red hypnotic eyes. Many other strange occurences had been going on also, John Keel wrote a book; The Mothman Prophecies and Richard Gere starred in the movie, which was not filmed in Point Pleasant..lol |

It is reported that as Chief Cornstalk laid dying, he placed a two-hundred year curse on the town which resulted in all the 1960's mayhem over the Mothman. littlesam1 Tue Apr 1, 2008 06:17 UTC Great historical information. I am thinking about taking a day trip here from Baltimore due to interest in the Mothman story. | shirleynoble Wed Oct 17, 2007 23:33 UTC I was born in Pt Pleasant, the mansion house was never called Walter Newman nothing. Or a tavern, it was a historic museum and calling it a tavern is terrible | triplehelix Mon Jan 16, 2006 22:13 UTC I loved the movie Mothman Prophecies. It had a lot to do with the chief's murder from the history files I read. Good stuff! | tpal Wed Aug 10, 2005 14:30 UTC Good work Lisa! I'm a little embarrassed by how little I know the events in your area...terrific well written history lesson. Now all you need is real Mothman photo and you'll be a celebrity ;-) Thanks...Tom |
