History of Pence Springs

Known as the Grand Hotel, this National Register inn is one of the historic mineral spas of the Virginias. A premier retreat from 1897 until the Great Depression, Pence Springs was the most popular and expensive hotel in West Virginia. At the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Pence Mineral Water won an award as the finest in the world. The present hotel is the fifth established near the famous spring, which as attracted visitors for more than 200 years.

Prehistoric Native Americans hunted buffalo at the spring, followed by the first white settlement circa 1760. From 1947 to 1985 Pence Springs was the State Prison for Women. Restoration began in 1986 and the Grand Hotel has come full circle. Now a fine country inn on a 400-acre plantation, pence Springs Hotel has attracted national attention and favorable editorial comment in Southern Living, Gourmet, Mid-Atlantic Country, Preservation News, WV Quarterly and Goldenseal magazin
