OLD STATE CAPITAL of ILLINOIS

Old State Capital in Springfield
Along historic Route 66, between Chicago and St. Louis. lies the state capital of illinois....Springfield!! Founded in 1818, the Central illinois City was settled in the midst of a rich farming region...very FLAT out there!!!
It became the state capital in 1837. The state capital used to be Vandalia!!

The corner stone of the state capital was laid on INDEPENDENCE DAY 1837. It took 15 yrs to complete the project, but only in use for 40 years. It was a Greek Revival building and was abandoned for the new larger capital complex. The OLD STATE CAPITAL now houses the Illinois State historical library.
shopping along historic main street in Springfield

Main Street Springfield

We shopped in some of the stores on Main Street. They have a nice mixture of Gift shops along with speciality stores and restauarants, along with historical markers of Lincoln.

Del's on Main Street

One of our favorite stores was established in 1934 in a building much older than that. It is located one block from Lincoln-Herndon Law Office. It is a speciality store called DEL'S..it has peanuts, popcorn, candies and ice cream. It is gorgeous inside and brings back lots of memories of these stores from my youth.
When you enter, the smells of the popcorn and candies..yummy!!!
