Grand Cayman

Peaceful Paradise

The Cayman Islands are probably the safest and most laid back islands in the Caribbean. There are 3 islands that make up the Caymans, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. All the islands are very small, with Grand Cayman being the largest and most populated, and Little Cayman being the smallest and least populated.

The Caymans are a British territory.

The economy is very strong, which is what contributes to the low crime rate. The main factor to the economy is banking. The Caymans have secrecy in banking laws, which means they don't report to foreign governments about their depositors. That means one can deposit or invest in a Cayman bank, and not have to report the intrest or earnings to their government.

The other major industry is tourism. The caymans even have their own airline, Cayman Airways.

The Caymans are flat islands, and are not the most beautiful in the Caribbean, but beatiful none the less. They do have some of the best beaches though. 7 mile beach on Grand Cayman is considered one of the best in the world. The waters surrounding the Caymans hold some of the best reefs in the region, and are the best in the Antilles for diving and snorkleing.

From budget to luxurious, the accomodations are all nice and clean. Most accomodations are hotels, but condos, and probably houses for rent can be found.

Night life on the Caymans can be a little slow. It's not non-existent, it's just not wild, or all night. The Caymans are more suited for relaxation, exploring, sports and outdoor recreation than for partying.

The people of the Caymans are some of the freindliest in the caribbean. Said to be the descendants of deserters from Cromwells army, shipwrecked pirates, and escaped slaves, they have intermixed into a mostly afro-anglo mix. The culture is a unique blend of British and Caribbean influences. Cayman Islanders are very polite people. You won't have the kind of harrassment that you get in places like Jamaica, where they endlessly harrass you to buy crap that no ones wants. If you want to buy things in the Caymans, it's usually done in a store.

Because of the British influence, the Caymans are more proper than other Caribbean islands. There is no public nudity allowed. The symbol of the Caymans is a sea turtle they call "Sir Turtle" and they have a slogan that goes "Sir Turtle says to keep your shell on" Also because it's a British territory, they drive on the left side of the road.

Currency used is the Cayman Island dollar, but US dollars and British pounds are reguarly accepted. The Cayman Island dollar trades at about $1.00CI to $2.00US.

I highly recommend the Cayman Islands as a Caribbean destination.
