Fantastic WWII sites to explore

by davidz50 - last update: Mar 22, 2005

Dangerous Beauty

The state department warned Americans not to go, but my son and I went anyway. Two weeks prior to our arrival on Guadalcanal, several gunmen were killed by the military at the airport.

We were escorted to-from our hotel prior to heading to out-islands the next day. Good thing. Plenty of tension. Some funky China/Solomon Island activities going on, but no one to explain.

We hired guides and they took us via dugout to Kennedy Island where JFK and crew washed up when PT109 was sunk. Deserted except for us.

We explored Japanese caves on Kolobangara Island, with a local chief showing us hidden caves. Weapons, hospital with morphine and operating instruments still at the ready.

The out-islands were great, very laid back and people were quite friendly. The big city on Guadalcanal was dirty and dangerous.

They evacuated Americans from the country about a month after we left.

Pros:"Out-island paradise, plenty of WWII sites"
Cons:"The big city is too dangerous to hang around"
In A Nutshell:"An explorer's dream"
