Packing Lists: Be prepared for a bit of rain

  • Luggage And Bags: Bring a good day pack as you will want to have water, camera and any other essential bits close at hand when you walk the London streets. A good idea to have a small central London map with Tube stations.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Always bring a shower proof jacket and an umbrella. London is notorius for rain and a bit of early morning mist. I also have a thermal top with me in case it gets a bit cold (doesn't take much extra room in my bag). Ensure that your shoes are well worn in before coming and can cope with cobbled streets.

Photo Equipment: I have a very small digital camera (Pentax Optio 5i which has been used for almost every photo on my site) but take whatever you feel comfortable with.

Packing Lists: Pack for the way you want to travel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Luggage And Bags: As you can see in the photo, I opted for an ugly green suitcase. This may appear to be a bad call initially until you get to Changi, LAX or Heathrow and see squillions of black or dark blue suitcases. Mine was always easy to pick out and saved me quite a bit of time.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I take only one pair of shoes so I make sure that they are multi purpose. In addition I have some sport-sandals (optimistic in the UK I know) which can come in handy. Being the UK I always carry an umbrella and a lightweight jacket. I also pack a thin polyprop long sleeve top in case it gets a bit chilly (I'm wearing my own one under my tee shirt in my site photo).

Toiletries & Medical Supplies: Anything you forget you can easily buy at Boots. I like to have sample size items so I can travel light. Some of these items are picked up from hotels (shampoo etc) so I don't bother packing anything in advance. In NZ there is a great place called Lush selling really handy travel sized multi-use soaps etc incl one that's shampoo & conditioner. They last for a very long time &, given the current restrictions on liquids in your carry on luggage, don't get questioned by over zealous guards.

Photo Equipment: For me the smaller the better. Currently it is an Optio 5i and it took every photo in my 2005 trip.

Miscellaneous: I like multi use items so I usually carry convertable pants so I have both longs & shorts in one unit. Remember that power sockets may differ to your home country so investigate an adaptor plug before you go.

The tube is not a good substitute for the bus tour because you can't see anything.

This is a very nicely done page with some excellent tips Guy. I was only able to be in London for 5 nights so I missed out on a lot. Joyce
