Burano takes approx 45 minutes by Vaporetto to get to and is well worth the visit if you have some spare time. The Island has many very colourful houses and boats lining the Canals. In the middle of the main square where you can see the characteristic crooked bell-tower, you find the antique lace gallery "Dalla Lidia" and this is definately worth a look. Lace is the mainstay - along with tourism - of the Island and has a rich history dating back several centuries.

A few minutes far from Burano (Torcello is close enough to see from Burano), is situated Torcello, known its beautiful churches and for its millennial history. Its small museum contains the historical traces of the island. Torcello has only 100 inhabitants, but around the 5th century it was a very important place and had a population of 20,000!!. There are a couple of outstanding churches to visit - Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has one of the walls completely covered with a wonderful Byzantine mosaic.

There are literally hundreds of back water canals and bridges to help you get lost in this wonderful city. Your map will normally show you the main places to visit but it is essential to wander around the smaller streets and bridges to get a proper feel of the magic of Venice. From the water, an entirely different Venice will show itself. Not much glamour here with the dirty underside of this great city bared for all to see. It will quickly become apparent to you that Venice is slowly but surely being gobbled up by the lagoon. A trip down the Grand Canal will show you the best of Venice, a trip down the back waters will show you the more desparate side of town.

As you go to the other Islands around the Achipeligo you will probably see this vista of Venice. Though the water appears dirty it is really just a reflection of the grey sky - when the sun comes out it looks a clean blue!! Due to the amount of water between the Islands the only way to travel is by boat - more specifically Vaporetto - which can be caught not far from St Marks Square to most destinations. A trip to Murano for glass, Burano for lace or Torcello for a wander all start with buying a ticket for a boat ride. A wonderful memory of a great place.

Burano has such a colourful array of buildings. Everywhere you look the houses are brightly painted to reflect this Island's passion for life. The boats sitting along the canals are similarly painted creating a really vibrant feel to this small island.

Burano has some wonderful architecture including several towers. This clock & bell Tower is your classic 'not quite straight' version as can be seen all over the Islands.

Murano has many wonderful buildings to wander around including this tower and church ensemble. As the Island is fairly small it doesn't take too long to walk around and get a good idea of the history of Murano. Not as colourful as Burano but very nice all the same.

A trip to Murano is not complete without visiting one of their famous glass makers. You can view items being produced then go in to the shop to buy a piece. The large stores can ship items anywhere in the world so it will always get home safe (hence the premis behind the Shakespeare play). When you visit these places you will note the absense of sales staff until you are ready to buy when these helpful ladies & gents appear from nowhere.......

Murano has some wonderful architecture dating back several centuries. This particular building had some really interesting windows with balcony and a great carving.
