Sleepy Town

Westport is a very sleepy west coast town and a nice spot for a relaxing time. It has its origins in the Gold Rush and lies at the mouth of the Buller River. Westport is the coast's oldest settlement and has all sorts of options such as white water rafting, horse trekking, caving, abseiling, jet boating, underground rafting or watching the dolphins which are frequently seen at the Buller river mouth.

There isn't too much to do in town but lots to see in the surrounding area. From Charleston (an old Gold Mining town that used to have 99 Pubs) to the South and Ngakawau, Granity and Hector to the North there are many options for day trips. An interesting point is that as you drive south of Westport the signs on the side of the road are in German and Japanese as well as English.

A good location to travel from

Westport is the central point for the coal mining still being carried out on the west coast. At places such as Stockton coal continues to be pulled out of the earth. It gets taken to Christchurch via Train where it ends up being shipped out through the port of Lyttelton.

A few years ago coal was the major export from the west coast and consequently, due to the number of large men doing the work, the coast had a fantastic Rugby League team!!
