When I first started working, the Tower section of this hotel was called Carruca House and it was a Government Department building. I was based up on level 8 which is now fully fitted into some very nice rooms. Next door, in what is the Heritage, was the Dept of Lands and Survey. The hotel is located right on Cathedral Square so it's well placed for access to everything in town. You can stay in either the hotel with its 1, 2 or 3 bedroon suites or in the Tower with its 135 rooms or penthouse suites.
Unique Qualities: The hotel has a fancy restuarant (Maddison's), gym, pool and day spa so you are well serviced for any need if money isn't an object. For full info check out their website which has their rates and current specials.

The Ibis is one of the newest in Christchurch built in June 2007 on land in front of the Telecom building in Hereford St. It has direct access to the Visitor Centre (when open) so a real snip when looking for holiday ideas. Being in Hereford st it is in the middle of town so close to restaurants and clubs when you want a night out and all of the shops when you want a bit of retail therapy. The hotel has rates from $94 and all of the facilities you'd expect of a major chain hotel. It has 155 rooms with various set-ups and a nice bar area with outside seating situated on the 1st floor - views are over Hereford St so nothing to get too excited about.

The Crowne Plaza is about 15 years old and still one of the better places to stay in Christchurch. It boasts not only nice rooms but also one of Christchurch's top restaurants in Canterbury Tales. You can also get authentic Japanese cuisine at the Yamagen or dine casually in Victoria Street Café. If you just want a drink, Rumpole’s Bar is the place to go. The bar has live sports coverage (big screen TV) and in the past a DJ if you want to have a dance a bit later on at night. The hotel has its own gym with range of exercise equipment and car parking ($20 or so each day). There are 298 rooms spread over 9 floors, many with a great view over Christchurch city.
