General Description of Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi is a district headquarters. It is bounded by the Jammu and Kashmir State across the river Jhelum on the East, Abbotabad district of NWFP on the North, Attock district on the West and Jhelum and Chakwal districts on the South.
The district is spread over an area of 5,279 Square Kilometres comprising of following six tehsils

1. Rawalpindi
2. Kahuta
3. Murree
4. Gujar Khan
5. Taxila
6. Kotli Sattain

CLIMATE AND GENERAL SOIL CONDITIONS

There is a wide variation of climate between various parts of the district. The Murree tehsil has severe winter and mild summer, while Gujar Khan and Rawalpindi tehsils have a hot summer and a moderate winter. The average rain fall in the district is 1550 mm. The land in tehsils Gujar Khan and Rawalpindi is generally plain.
