  • The guide book says yuo can only visit City Hall if you're on a guided tour. This is true. When we got there however, we found that there were only Spanish speaking tours running. We signed up for one anyway figuring at least we could go inside. When the tour started our guide started giving the tour in English. It was a nice surprise. See? Everything works out in the end...

  • Entrance is free so go and take a look inside. It is one of the most unique churches I have ever been to. It was beautiful.

  • The Royal Palace in Madrid is one the biggest in Europe with the most number of rooms. The entrace fee and guided tour was nominal. But unfortuneately they only take you through a small fraction of the rooms in the palace. Make you you don't miss the alchemist den. Being a chemist by trade it was first on the list of things to see there and you can see all the flasks and chemicals that they used to try and turn base metal into gold.

  • We arrived bright an early (around 9 am) to find this plaza completely deserted. So go later on if you want to people watch. There is a tourist centre in one of the south corners that give out free maps and tour information.

  • The Puerta del Sol marks both the epicenter of the city and the epicenter of Spain. It is from this point in Spain that all distances are measured and all of the six major highways originate. There is a plaque marking the spot. Don't blink because you might miss it.

  • Also located in the Puetra del Sol is the cute statue of a bear pawing the madrono. The madrono is a strawberry tree and the emblem of the city. This square is a popular meeting place for the locals.

It's confusing. But RENFE has Customer Assistance points in the station staffed by nice people who can help.
