Lima Things to Do

Things To Do: Huaca Pucllana
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This pyramid right inside the Lima city limits is a short walk within the Miraflores district. Huaca Pullana dates back to 200-700 AD. This is nine centuries before the Incans started building Macchu Picchu. This huge construction, made from small handmade, sun-dried brick, is 22 meters high. It is divided into two areas, for ceremonial and administrative ends. You can visit by guided tours only. The guided tours include a walk around and on the pyramid, a visit through the museum, the small park with native flora and fauna and the craftsmen's house where handicrafts are on exhibit and for sale. Admission is about 5 sols ($1.50 USD) which includes the tour in either English or Spanish.

Plaza San Martin: A llama on her head???
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • At the base of the equestrian statue in PLaza San Martin is this delightful little statue of a woman with a llama on her head. The story goes the Peruvians commissioned the statue to be made in Spain. The Peruvian wanted the woman to have a crown of flames over her head. The Peruvian spanish word for flame actually means llama in Spain so the statue showed up with a llama on her head!

All Around The Country: The world's ugliest dogs
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The Peruvians have a breed of dog that is like no other. Hairless, they also have very high body temperatures. Throughout history they have been used for medical purposes - now don't worry none of the dogs were harmed. They used the dogs essentially as hot water bottles. The would put the dogs on aching joints to relieve pain and cramps.

San Francisco Church And Convent: The Catacombs!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Underneath the Church and Monastery of San Francisco are the world famous catacombs. There you will find over 70,000 skeletons dating back to the middle ages. During the middle ages it was more desirable to be buried in the church as it would place you closer to God so as a results the catacombs were stuffed full of people. In the 1970's the monks at the monastary cleaned and aired out the catcombs artfully (and not so artfully) arranging all the bones present. So you will find quite a macabre display of human remains. A must see!

Plaza Mayor And Surroundings: Plaza Mayor
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The mornign we went to Plaza Mayor it was eerily empty. There was some sort of government function going on so there were guards all around the square keeping everybody out. iT was still a nice place to relax and people watch.

    Museos - Museums: Museo d'Oro
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This museum lost a lot of it's noteriety when a good portion of the museum was found to contain fakes. Supposedly they've cleaned up their act. The museum is split up into two sections the military section and the section containing Incan/pre-incan treasures. If Lima is your first stop in Peru this will probably be your first taste of the ancient Peruvian civilizations. This section contains a number of interesting mummies, pottery and artifacts that will certainly have you entralled.

Also located at the museum are a number of shops selling upscale woolen garments and knick-knacks.
