There really isn't much to Lesterville, Mo. It really is just a bump in the road. But it is where we go to camp on the beautiful, crystal clear Black River. And it is clear...very, very, clear!! It is a great river for children. It's shallow and the current is not very strong. Don't forget the goggles. The kids will swim for hours watching the fish and looking at the pretty rocks. (who knows they may even find some money some floater lost, it's been known to happen) Bring the kids some nets and buckets, they're sure to catch some tadpoles, crawdads, or minnows. (I try to encourage my kids to let the poor creatures go) Rent some innertubes and spend the day floating the river. It'll give you a chance to see more of the river. Innertubes not your thing, there's always canoes and rafts to rent too.
Lesterville also makes a great base camp to see several other unique Missouri State Parks within 20 or 30 minutes - Johnson Shut Ins, Taum Sauk Mountain, Elephant Rocks State Park, and Fort Davidson.
There really isn't much in Lesterville. One small motel that I don't really know anything about. No grocery stores. But there is a couple of convenience stores. There's not any restaurants to speak of, except Lenny's. You can get burgers and pizza to go at Lenny's. There are motels about 30 minutes away in Pilot Knob or Ironton. But we like to spend our time on the river, not driving. So if you like camping you will love the Black River. There are several campgrounds to choose from. If your not into camping, you may not enjoy this trip as much.
- Pros:beautiful black river
- Cons:not much else there
- In a nutshell:great outdoors camping trip
