Benevento is today an historical and culture rich city and offer many possibilities to know, as well as the chief town, his province territory too. It actually presents a rich archaeological, eno-gastronomic and religious offer to testimony his ancient origins, moreover the traditions and the local culture make the Sannio Beneventano one of the most characteristic and genuine Italian zones.
It is to remember besides the typical production of wine (many with denomination of origin controlled and guaranteed) such as the white one Falanghina or the Taburno red wine and also extra virgin olive oils, cheeses and delicious nougats but in spite of this variety of places, flavours and tradition Benevento is still today less known and all to discovery…
The legend wants the city of Benevento to be founded by the greek hero Diomede. Benevento, important sannitic civilty centre, entered in history when The Sanniti, clever and strong warriors, in the Forche Caudine battle (321 b.C.) defeated the powerful roman army. The Sanniti people after the win were defeated and subdued to the Rome’s rule.It is to remember for this the Benevento etymology which assumes different meaning. At first his name was Maloenton connected to Malòeis, the herd protector god , being since then a rich herd sheeps and goats land.
The Romans interpreted in Mal(um)eventum (bad event) and so they changed it in B(onum)eventum to memory the win achieved nearby his walls( 275 b.C.).With the Romans the city became very soon an important economic centre in the commercial traffic between Rome and the East
After the fall of Roman Empire started for Benevento the Longobard rule,at first was a Dukedom then changed in Principality.
