Amazing Positano! Built on a sheer oceanside cliff

by GuitarStan - last update: Dec 12, 2007

WOW! Pic taken from the coastal road.

The views along the Amalfi coast are AMAZING!

My wife and I stayed in Positano for 3 nights. We knew we would arrive at night so when we awoke in the morning we had an almost shocking awakening at the unbelievable views of Positano. This was my wife's favorite stop of our 2 week stay in Italy. Their are small churches to visit here and a whole lot of shopping! When dining out in the evening, they serve you "lemoncello" the traditional after dinner appertif. It is said that this area of Campania is the home of lemoncello. I had heard much about this drink and waited for my first sip to be drank in Positano. It IS strong and served very cold, I believe they keep it in the freezer. If you watch the movie "Under The Tuscan Sun" they have a small story about this drink. I am not big on shopping, but the stunning views kept me entertained! I would like to hike this area of Italy someday......looks awesome.
Positano bus stop "Grotto Fornillo"

Every turn of the road offers beautiful views!

This picture was taken at the Internal Positano "Grotto Fornillo", bus stop. Our Pensione Maria Luisa was located down the path from this bus stop. There was much social activity amongst the locals at this stop. This guy in the picture seemed to always be here, we named him Flavio! It was enjoyable just to watch/listen as life went by while waiting for the next bus. It was a nice respite in our conquest of Italy and it's large cities. In the movie "Under The Tuscan Sun" they have a small clip of this bus stop with the traffic going in the wrong direction for filming purposes. It is one-way only.
Praiano coastline/marina.

Visit other towns along the Amalfi Coast.

You can take a bus to Praiano and other cities. One euro to get on the bus to Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello. Be sure to look at the marquee at the top/front of the bus...very easy. This picture shows the coastline down by the Praiano marina. We had lunch at a very small caffe at the marina, I believe it was called "Mare petit Restaurant". It was run by a sweet older lady who spoke no English and we spoke little Italian but, you could tell she was very proud of her little place. She offered us to taste her freshly cooked zucchini and eggplant...very yummy! This part of Praiano is not touristy and you won't see shops, but the views of the coastline are stunning to say the least!

Pros:"Stunning Views, Easy to get around and Lemoncello!"
Cons:"Hard to get to....requires 2 trains and 2 bus rides."
In A Nutshell:"How did they build this town on the side of a cliff!"

Hi, I'm about to book a stay at Maria Luisa in Postiano and read your review. I'm wondering about the location? We wont have a car and I'm concerned about getting around. How far is the hotel from the town/activities/restaurants. Thanks so much. Cathy

Hi Stan, Italy is great and Positano looks fantastic, we only made it to Sorrento so I guess we will have to return.
