Beautiful, Enchanting Venice

by GuitarStan - last update: Oct 25, 2006

The Grand Canal taken from the Accademia Bridge.

Two days in Venice is not nearly enough!

My wife and I were excited about visiting Venice, more so her than me. But, once we got there we quickly realized we should have planned a longer stay. Pictures just don't do this place justice. You can get lost very quickly, so have a good map and don't be in too much of a hurry...you will still get lost! The views of the canals are almost hypnotising. With views like the picture, you will find yourself just staring out at the canals. The water is so high that the bottom floor of almost all the buildings are not used and the first floor windows of many buildings are boarded up.
Murano

Murano....the place for glass souvenirs.

Take the vaporetto over to Murano, takes about 10 minutes. They have many many places to shop/browse for souvenirs. I asked my wife several times "Have you ever seen something like that back home"? I wanted to get something original but, not too expensive. You CAN find original pieces of glass/jewelry at very reasonable prices, we bought several. Along with the glass, Murano just happens to be very beautiful also! It is not as crowded as Venice, so you feel that you are off the beaten path. The buildings are painted in all sorts of bright colors and along with the green water, it makes for a very attractive photo op.
Piazza San Marco

Venice and Piazza San Marco

A visit to Venice would not be complete without a visit to Piazza San Marco. I wished we had planned a longer stay so we could have taken a tour of St. Marks Basillica, Doge's Palace and Galleria dell Accademia. I guess we'll have to go back! We did take a nightime gondola ride with serenade. One of the only tours I booked in advance was through Expedia for this gondola ride. I paid $90.00 for both of us and we got the same ride that others paid much more for, a couple we rode with paid over $200 for theirs. I heard these gondola rides our terribly expensive, so how or why the huge difference in price...I dunno. Check Expedia out, it was worth it and we actually had a good time! Our gondola ride took off from Santa Maria d. Giglio.

Pros:"Beautiful, Unusual and Murano across the bay."
Cons:"Expensive, our hotel was the costliest of our stay in Italy."
In A Nutshell:"You need at least 3 days to explore Venice!"
