| Tom & Phil, Kampa Island Prague Christmas Day 2001 |
“I enjoyed myself in Prague…Prague had once more become a cosmopolitan centre in which Europe found its identity again and for the last time.” — Oskar Kokoschka, (1886–1980), Viennese artist who had settled in Prague in the early 1930s
Prague, the gem of European Mediaeval architecture, was no more magical than at Christmas. For a Czech version of a Currier & Ives print read my VT Prague tip entitled “Snowy Square” with my photo of Kampa Island snapped from the Charles Bridge.
The accompanying photo for this intro section was taken Christmas Day 2001 as we strolled Kampa Island, near the Lesser Town section of the city. The naked tree branches form a transparent curtain between us the River Vltava and the Charles Bridge, to the left. The spires of the towers on the opposite side of the river can be seen. Prague is famous for its many spires, see my VT Prague travelogue about the subject.
Christmas is a grand time of year to visit Prague; the crowds are small, and are made up mostly of locals, not tourists. You can also sample a traditional Czech Christmas dish: carp, eaten for Christmas Eve dinner, see my Prague local customs tip. |
