Name of Shop: Moriondo & Gariglio
“Let not your mind run on what you lack as much as on what you have already.” — Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180)
Moriondo & Gariglio is the oldest chocolate shop in Rome. It began business operations in 1850 when the first shop was founded in Turin as the chocolatier to the House of Savoy, Italy’s royal family. When Vittorio Emmanuel and his Court and family moved to Rome following the country’s unification Moriondo & Gariglio followed, opening a branch in the new capital.
Its recipes have been handed down for generations over the company’s 100+ year history. The chocolates are hand made on the premises.
We visited this old-world shop, with its red walls, dark wood trim and glass shelves lining the wall, at day’s end; the shop was empty of customers. We could take our time with our selections; samples were even offered. Nothing is prepackaged; anything you want will be boxed by hand by the sweet, non-English-speaking staff. But do not worry: this is chocolate, a universal language! Chocolates are not the only confections for sale; those made from almonds, chestnuts, and other nuts are also very good.

Name of Shop: Sermoneta
The afternoon in late May that we walked into Sermoneta on via del Tritone a charming saleslady (please see photo) helped us with our purchase.
We were on the hunt for all-cotton, scene-patterned, jacquard, kitchen dishtowels. There were 10 scenes to choose from, the saleslady, who was very good in a subtle way, displayed all the choices. We picked one each from the olive oil, wine, kitchen and bread scenes, in colors blue, yellow, green and red.
Sitting on the Quirinale Hill, one of Rome’s seven original hills, this 1898 location was the first for this charming, old-fashioned, linen shop. There is one at Piazza di Spagna and another branch on the Corso.
The entire shopping experience at Sermoneta was unhurried and friendly. What a civilized way to do business. The saleslady did not speak English; it did not matter. We got our business done in a most pleasant fashion.
The store carries bed and table linens, and bath and kitchen towels at the high end of the market.

Name of Shop: Women’s Clothing
“I love beauty…it’s not my fault.” — Valentino (1932-)
During our May 2007 trip to Rome Valentino’s boutique on via Condotti was undergoing a renovation. To conceal the work-in-progress a wooden wall was erected and then covered in Valentino Red. The two nuns stopped in front of the red wall to pose for a friend. I could not resist taking a photo for myself of a sight that screamed “Rome!”.
Along the very fashionable via Condotti Valentino shares the street with other big names in Italian fashion, including Bruno Magli, Bulgari, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, La Perla, Prada, and Salvatore Ferragamo. Other luxury brands along this street at the foot of Piazza Espagna are Cartier and Christian Dior.

Name of Shop: Marmi Line
“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” — Michelangelo (1475-1564)
For a wide variety of marble objects, Marmi Line offers three locations in central Rome. These works in marble are mesmerizing. The detail and polish of each item shows off the skill and craftsmanship that Italians have been known for since before the Caesars ruled the Roman Empire.
Unlike the handwork that Michelangelo used to create his David, the items for sale here were largely created with power tools. A looping video in the shop near the Pantheon shows how the process begins in the marble quarries and continues to the workshop using modern electric-powered tools for cutting, chiseling, grinding, sanding and polishing.
Do not let these up-to-date techniques stop you from buying some of these beautiful dishes, bowls, lamp bases or decorative items. We bought two fruit compotes and some marble fruit. The Bosc pear is remarkably life-like, until you pick up this piece of ‘fruit.’
What To Buy: Whatever suits your fancy, but remember marble is heavy!
