Was that the lake then?

by mungu_kwa_chupi - last update: Mar 15, 2005

Lake Manyara is an inland salt lake. Flamingos usually nest on its fertile shores but unfortunately in 2004, algae had poisoned many of them leaving the shores rank with the stench of death. Not suprisingly seeing this was not the peak of my day but I will never forget the unusually dull pinkness of the flamingos stretching along the encrusted salt.

Diversity

The rest of the national park is filled with a great range of wildlife; termite mounds tower upwards, dotted around the park, hippos bathe and giraffes graze. Baboons seemed the most common animal although they were by no means my favourite. (Just a funny little story: It might not have been, but I saw a baboon mount another baboon which I had tjhought was male and its rear end did seem much redder when (s)he was dismounted!)

Best Bit

I have no doubt in the fact that my favourite site was that of the elephants of lake Manyara. For reasons I am not fully aware of, I have always felt a strange affinity to elephants epecially african ones (might be the big ears!) It is for this reason that the sight of a family of elephants, including a widdle baybee won, was my favourite moment in the park. It even beat a giraffe within about 20m and the sight of Adam vomitting within 2m
