Restaurant Name: Trzesniewski
What exactly is a "Brötchen"? Brötchen comes from the word Brot (bread) - literal translation: a small bread. What we mean here are little appetizer-sized sandwiches. Trzesniewski, in Vienna since 1902, is a semi-fast-food restaurant that serves 21 types of Brötchen - all freshly made right there. Some facts: - all the recipes are top-secret and strictly guarded - Trzesniewski was the first to serve the "Pfiff" ( 1/8L glass bier) - all ingredients are fresh; all eggs used are from freerange chickens - they bake aprx. 600kg dark bread daily, which is cut into 4x8 cm pieces And one more thing - exactly HOW do you pronounce that name??? Tscheschnijewski - or so.... (silent "R"!)
Favorite Dish: My personal favorites were: 1) smoked lox 2) Matjes with onion

Maroni-booths around town: Maroni, fresh Maroni!

Restaurant Name: Maroni-booths around town
Another non-restaurant restaurant-tip (they should really call this food-section). So you wander around Vienna in Winter and you see these booths all over the place: a black kettle in front, a guy usually rubbing his gloved hands behind it, and otherwise sparse. What is this? You wonder, but you don't want to go to close, since the guy in the booth looks a little - well not so friendly... Don't worry - go ahead - it's a "Maroni-brater" (Maroni-maker); they sell Maroni (from the family of achorns), Bratkartoffel (grilled potato-slices), and Kartoffel-puffer (hash-browns). You tell him what you want, and you'll get your order hot off the oven, served in a paper-cone. There are no artificial ingredients, or any additives - it's just the hot maroni or potato and salt for flavor. This is a great snack, since it heats you up from the inside, and the flavor is unique. Highly recommend trying it! (If you have never eaten a Maroni - you peel off the outer shell and eat the inside.)
Favorite Dish: There are only 3 dishes: maroni, hash browns, or potatos. All 3 taste great.
