Things To Do: Croon Along With The Street Musicians

"When the moooooon hits your eyes like-a-biga-pizza-pie - that's amooooohhhhreeeeeee" - Dean Martin himself couldn't have sounded better! Well, that might be an exaggeration, but it sure is fun to watch and listen to the street musicians all over Rome. We encountered them while sitting on the patio of a restaurant, enjoying pasta and wine, all of a sudden the sounds of accordeon and contra-bass breaking the silence. They sang their hearts out, and one is quite happy to tip them for their efforts. For a little extra, they'll take special song-request...

Directions: They are everywhere - outside of restaurants, inside restaurants, street-corners, and pretty much anywhere else where there are people who will listen....and tip them!

Things To Do: Feel The Wind In Your Hair On Bus 110

Since this was an impromptu-trip and we were pretty much clueless, the first thing we did was the Rome tour on Bus 110. Bus 110 is a double-decker that goes around Rome in a loop (~ 1 hour), leaving at Termini. You can hop on and off at numerous sites: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, Vatican, Castel S. Angelo, Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia/Campidoglio, Colosseum / Foro Romano / Palatino, Quirinale, and back to Termini Station.
This is great to get a general overview and feel for the city, and taking this tour is vey helpful in deciding which of the many sights to tackle first.
Unfortunately none of the headphones were working, but it was a great experience nevertheless. ....yeah ok...I did miss a bit of it since I was trying to figure out how to change the settings on Ash's fancy-schmancy new camera.
So my recommendation: Have your camera ready to go - this tour provides some great photo-ops!
Cost: aprx. 13 Euros/person

Address: Termini Bus Station
Directions: Outside the terminal where all the busses are. Tickets can be bought outside as well, at a little booth on one of the pedestrian-islands between the buses.

Roman Forum: Ruins, Statues, and Other Odd Things

Most everyone has seen pictures of the forum, and when you actually get there - it looks just like in the pictures. 'So why bother and go there if it looks exactly the same?' one might ask. Physically being there is like stepping into the past. It is impressing, it is overwhelming - it is a fusion of past and present, and one's mind begins to imagine what it might have been like 2000 years ago....
For us it was also a wonderfully nice stroll on a sunny afternoon - definitely one of the many fond memories to be treasured for a lifetime. Since our time in Rome was very short, we only had a couple of hours, but I would definitely recommend taking at least 1/2 day since the grounds are very large, and there is much to see.

The legend goes that if you throw a coin into the Trevi fountain, you will return to Rome - aaah, wish it was tomorrow. This is probably the most beautiful fountain in the world. We had read in a tourguide that it is the most beautiful at night - so in the evening we ran across the streets of Rome until we stumbled onto it - and there it was. So incredibly amazing!
A few facts: The first fountain at the site was built in 1453 by Pope Nikolaus V., financed from wine-taxes. In 1732 Clemens XII ordered the current fountain to be built, and about 30 years later his predecessor Clemens XIII christined it. It is suspected that the architect was Nicola Salvi, but that is not a known fact.
The sculpture in the middle is Neptun or Oceanus. The 2 tritons were created by Pietro Bracci: the left one trying to tame a fiery horse (symbolizing the rough sea), and the right one blowing a shell-horn (symbolizing the quiet sea).
Trevi became famous for a scene in Fellinis "La Dolce Vita", when Anita Ekberg takes a late-night bath in the fountain.

If you are looking for something specific, Rome has a street for everything: Via dei Cestari - church costumes and devotional items of all sorts. Via Condotti - Rome's most elegant shopping-mile Via dei Coronari - famous for antiques Via Marguttai - some of Rome's best galleries Via della Croce - Wine and delicatessen Via Appia Antica - as the name says (antica - antique) this very old cobblestone street is located somewhat south of the city center near the christian catacombs Via del Corso - one of the most important streets in Rome, it stuffed full with shops and tourists. Nice to walk around, since it is a pedestrian only street. Via Guilia - one of Rome's most elegant street. If you can afford a place there - you've got it made! Via Rasellai - this street bore witness to some of Rome's saddest history: Italian partisans lured a national-socialist group in a trap. The Germans avenged by killing 335 innocent Romans. Via Veneto - this is a blast from the not-so-distant past: fashion of the 50's and 60's
