I've spent a third of my life in England - the middle third. I came as a visitor , to work for a while, travel and go home again - the obligatory "working holiday" of the '60s before "settling down". I stayed for twenty years! and when I finally left, it was with a husband, two children, two cats and a love of small villages, market towns, beautiful gardens, stately homes, pubs, canals, church architecture, bluebells, beech woods, Thames barges, punting, oh! the list is endless.
MrL's work, and a daughter living in London, takes me back there regularly, neither a tourist nor a resident any more, but the best of both in a way, in holiday mode with time to explore and yet the ease of familiarity with the way the place works.
This page is going to be completely random "work in progress", an odd mish-mash of favourite places - many of them well off the usual tourist beat - and, as time goes on, new discoveries. Maybe you'll find a place here that you know well, or that tempts you to go and explore for yourself.

toonsarah Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:57 UTC Lots of places I already know and love (Jane Austen's house is a particular favourite of mine, as is Marlborough and wonderful Cliveden of course) but also plenty I don't but should, eg Grey's Court and the SIlk Mill | Trekki Sun Dec 14, 2008 06:42 UTC Magnificent updates, Leyle :-)) Even another gem by "my" Sir Charles Barry:-) Stokesay Castle and Grey's Court look fantastic and the silk mill is something I must see one day. Oh and Henley: did you ever attended a Swan Upping? | VeronicaG Wed Dec 10, 2008 15:20 UTC Enjoyed my return visit to your England page, Leyle. I especially found your comments on the silk manufacturers interesting...as well as, the histories of the staid old buildings found throughout this country. | deecat Thu Nov 20, 2008 17:12 UTC Always assured of top quality when I read your pages. Excellent introduction. My daughter lived in London at one time [about a year] and I visited her and as an English teacher for 32 yrs., I adore it. |
