Just as DC is shortspeak for Washington - so El DF stands for Mexico's capital - a huge, sprawling metropolis - an exhilerating and exhausting mix of sophisticated elegance, colonial charm, shady parks and tree-lined avenues and plazas, scruffy streets and poverty-stricken shantytowns, all bound together by a never-ending traffic jam and overlaid with pollution to die from. Catholic piety, shades of the Aztecs, fabulous murals and one of the truly great museums of the world are all part and parcel of the city.
The Aztecs who were living here when the Spanish arrived believed that this place was the very centre of the earth - a place that would be revealed to them by the sighting of an eagle perched on a cactus and with a snake in its beak. Where the eagle was sighted became the centre of their city, the Zocalo, still today the centre of the modern cit.y.
With over one quarter of Mexico's entire population living here, the city presents a truly representative face of the country - with all its strengths and glories ... and its weaknesses. You really must spend some time here if you are to begin to come to grips with this fascinating and diverse country, its history and its people.
