The Land of the Pharaohs

Welcome to our Egypt page

A work in progress, with contributions from all the camels (how appropriate is that?) so something of a mixed bag - lots of general advice and tips about the everyday reality of living in this most fascinating - and, at times, frustrating place, plus a very personal smattering of tips for tourists. Of course there are the biggies - how can you leave them out? - but we'll do our best to show you some of the smaller things about Egypt that make it such a rewarding place.

Check out our other pages on Egypt too - Cairo, Pyramids of Giza for information that is more particular to them.

Before the caravan sets off though - a couple of stories about how some of us came to feel so connected to this ancient land .

Khadi

Perhaps G. Flaubert said it best for me back in 1850.

'You ask me whether the Orient is up to what Imagined it to be. Yes, it is; and more than that, it extends far beyond the narrow idea I had of it. I have found, clearly dileneated everything that was hazy in my mind. Facts have taken the place of suppositions- so excellently so that it is often as though I were suddenly coming upon old forgotten dreams'

Cairo's Nefertiti

A little bit from Leyle

Nefertiti did it for me - in Berlin. One look at that glorious portrait bust in the Egyptian Museum there - and I was hooked.

I've really only dipped my toe in the water as far as travelling in Egypt - one short trip is all I've managed to date - real time spent there is yet to come. Meantime, I get my regular fixes by way of an Egyptian studies group here at home (I've been to some amazing lectures over the last few years on on some truly esoteric aspects of Ancient Egyptian life and archaeology!), museums and exhibitions, and reading.

And Nefertiti? Beautiful as she is in Berlin, it 's her unfinished bust in the Museum in Cairo that I now find utterly beguiling.
