With a few hours to kill in Los Angeles between flights and a bit of pre-planning, a visit to the Getty Museum's Villa at Malibu was a great way to pass the time.
We picked up a car and headed up the coast. There was a howling gale blowing, whipping sand right across the road from the beach, so there was no temptation to stop along the way, but when we turned off the Pacific Coast Highway and took the road up to the villa, we left the wind behind us and entered a world of tranquil beauty.
The Getty Villa is a meticulous reconstruction of a Roman Villa, surrounded by beautiful gardens. It houses the Getty Foundation's collection of works from the Classical worlds of Greece, Rome and Etruria in a wonderful setting that seeks to emulate the times in which the beautiful objects displayed were created. The only museum in the United States solely devoted to this period of the world's history, a visit here is quite an experience.

tiabunna Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:48 UTC This really does "look the part" - very impressive. But no larks' tongues & no elephant parking? I was going to visit with my mate Hannibal, but may not now I know that. :)) | Pawtuxet Tue Sep 2, 2008 14:05 UTC Very informative presentation of the Getty Museum. I've heard so much about it. Imagine the views are spectactular from the restaurant. Handy to know about pre-booking. | Trekki Sat May 24, 2008 18:42 UTC Interesting! I think I've heared about this collection and the villa but now it is the first time that I read a review. Haha, free admission but then 8 $ parking fee - these guys are funny :-) | robertgaz Fri May 23, 2008 00:36 UTC "Under the shade of a mulberry tree" sounds like a song I know ;~) |
