Mostar pilgimage

Mostar morning light
Mostar wasn't on our agenda at all when we visited Croatia in 2006, but a chance remark as we were arranging our car rental in Dubrovnik had us consulting the map and suddenly a side-trip into Bosnia and Hercegovina was a detour on the road to Split. Our only object then was to see the famous bridge that gave the city its name.

Along with so many others we had watched the bitter fighting that tore the country we knew as Yugoslavia apart, willing the bridge that had stood as a symbol of co-existence to defy the odds stacked against it and to survive the destruction that was being wrought on both the people and the fabric of the Balkans by armies made up of those who had so recently been fellow-citizens. How sad we felt when it fell in 1993, and how gladdened by its restoration. Now we had the chance to see it for ourselves.

And so it was that we set off along the road to Mostar, to make a brief pilgrimage to a place that symbolized so much of those terrible years and of the hope for the future of the region.

The bridge was all we thought it would be ... beautiful and moving. Of Mostar itself we had no preconceived ideas - but we were so charmed by what we found that we resolved to return, this time to stay long enough to explore the town further, to absorb some of its evening atmosphere, to wake to its early morning sounds. The night we spent there this year has only whetted our appetite for more ... we're definitely going back....

Your brilliant photos and insightful tips & travelogue bring back memories of my own visit to Mostar in 1969. A Czech uncle of mine was stationed in Mostar with the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1909, until he caught malaria and got sent home.

Thank you Leyle for showing us a place with so many Slavic names. I would find a river with the name Neretva and a village with the name Makarska somewhere here in Russia... Bridges are wonderful, pity they were destroyed.
