.... and such elegance too! Vienna ..... the name alone conjures up such wonderful images -
Imperial palaces, rose-scented parks and gardens, statues of saints, emperors and composers, mediaeval golden crowns and modern golden paintings, dancing white horses, churches glowing with gilding and stained-glass-filtered light, angel-voiced boys in a Royal Chapel, crowded cafes and divine cakes
Do I need to go on? Enough to say that Vienna promises so much and doesn't let you down. No wonder so many people love to return here, again and again

| | My most recent visit to Vienna was in 2006, my first was nearly 40 years ago. Of course there have been changes over the years but much of Vienna's charm lies in the largely unaltered appearance and atmosphere of the city. There is so much to catch the eye, so much to absorb everywhere you look, and both the pace of the cityand its topography encourage you to do just that. So many sights are within easy walking distance of each other. Within the old city centre walking is virtually a must - but pedestrianised streets, no steep hills, no pressing crowds and everywhere, beautiful buildings, fascinating details, lovely things, quirky things.... all these make walking here a pleasure.
Walking isn't just for sight-seeing during the day though. Early morning walks show the city waking up and getting ready for the day - shops opening, fiaker's arriving at their stand by the Dom, pavements being washed and swept, chairs being unstacked at the outdoor cafes. Evening strolls will take you window shopping down streets lined with antique dealers, elegant shops, spotlit statues and churches spilling an evening congregation onto the street, into now-quiet lanes and past thronged theatre entrances as you head to and from your evening's activities.

| | There's nothing quite like seeing a place through the eyes of someone who calls it home. And that's when the magic of VT comes in... Dear Ursula, who answered my questions and then came to meet us and spend the day, showing us HER Vienna - favourite places and small details, how to eat wieners the Viennese way, lunch straight from an authentic Austrian kitchen, and a recommendation for an excellent heuriger we would never have found on our own. What a lovely day we had, one that really added an extra dimension to our time in Vienna.

themajor Thu Jul 3, 2008 21:09 UTC Goodness, never seen so much detailed info on Vienna's churches! Are you a papal envoy? Great pickpocketing tip - 'er, that's avoiding it not carrying it out as a business venture. Hope to be back there in November. I too shall be avoiding the Schoenberg! | Riaiff Sun Jan 27, 2008 17:37 UTC Great page with excellent tips | Penelope4 Thu Dec 20, 2007 09:59 UTC Am being extra careful by not travelling within Afghanistan as much as I would like to. Nice page on Vienna, I must say. Cheers! | kyoub Sun Dec 9, 2007 23:47 UTC Thanks for the virtual tour of Vienna. Verywell done. |
