Sea, sand - and that beautiful river This is my hometown. In fact, the house I grew up in is just about bang in the middle of this photo. That gorgeous stretch of white sand is Cottesloe Beach and the water at the top of the picture is the Swan River. I learnt to sail on that river and swim at that beach. I knew I lived in Paradise.
We gave MrL a flight in a Tiger Moth for a birthday present - the payoff was this great photo - and more like it, also used here in a couple of Things to Do tips - but I'm going up next time!

| | The Little Dove It's 400 years since the first European sighting of Australia was recorded the Dutch ship, DUYFKEN.
April 6, 2006 saw a wonderfully faithful replica of the little ship set sail from Fremantle Harbour on a commemorative voyage that took her to 25 ports around the Australian coast before she arrived in Cairns (Queensland) where she is to stay for the next 3 years.
She's the second such replica of an historic ship built in Fremantle - Captain Cook's bark ENDEAVOUR was the first. After 11 years of sailing all around the world, she's now housed in Sydney at the National Maritime Museum.
Whilst both ships are now berthed in the regions of Australia that relate to their historic discoveries, here in the west we still claim them as our own and take great pride in the fact that they were built here.

| | Harvest time Late summer sees the arrival of the grapes and melons that are such a part of the late summer scene here. Whether for the table (as these Red Globes are), for drying or for the vintage, the vines are laden and the roadside stalls in the Swan Valley are piled high with green, red and purple bunches, freshly picked and bursting with flavour, while piles of melons scent the air - and the car - all the way home. Sunday in the Valley, tasting (and buying) wine from one of the excellent vineyards, lunching at a favourite restaurant, adding some yummy chocolate and nougat from the specialist outlets, olives and condiments from another, fresh produce, visiting a gallery .... what a great start to the week. You don't have to wait for harvest time to go of course. Spring in the Valley is gorgeous, winter's a good time to visit too. The only time I'sd avoid is a baking hot day in Summer - that's the time to head for the beach.
