Roman grandeur

City of the Sun

Fabulous folly
Greek Heliopolis - the City of the Sun - when the Romans took it over and started to build the temples there in 60BC Baalbek became absolute epitome of all the excesses of Rome, so clearly evidenced now in these gargantuan ruins. They add a new meaning to the word "monumental" and yet, from a distance, such is their perfection of scale, tthey appear to be the size of other temples of the era. It's only when you actually come near that you realize how massive they actually are, dwarfing the memory of any other temple you may have seen.

Night at Baalbeck is the hallmark of the Old town. But regarding food, your comment should be updated, there are a lot of new restaurants and they are delicious: Rawabi restaurant is one of them.

The extremely tall columns and some aspects of the layout and artwork definetly resembles the Temple of Baal in Palmyra...nice writing as usual...alan
