Getting TO/AROUND: If you're not driving yourself, you have several options for getting to places out of Beirut. Buses and microbuses go all over the country and are cheap but you do need to check to see when the last bus goes for your return, it can be quite early in the day and, of course you are restricted by their timetables for any on-going travel you may want to do. Service taxis serve lots of places, especially along the coast and inland to Baalbek. You can pick these longer haul services up at the bus stations. Neither of these options are very satisfactory if you want to stop along the way to your ultimate destination or if you want to fit a lot in to your day. To do that, you really need to hire a car with a driver. The day we spent with one of our drivers, visiting the Chouffe and Beit ed-dine, was all the more pleasurable for his informed knowledge of the places we visited and his charming company.

lynnehamman Fri Sep 11, 2009 01:44 UTC One can only hope that the restoration of this lovely city continues, and that the destruction of war never happens again. India has the same problem with old synagogues and almost zero Jewish population now. Its sad. | Nemorino Mon Aug 31, 2009 21:20 UTC Evocative tips on this beautiful but battered city! | Delia_Madalina Sun Jun 21, 2009 19:21 UTC Your pages about Lebanon and Beirut are enchanting and very helpful for my visit this summer. The marks of the July war must have changed the general architecture yet again. Raouche Rocks, an unforgettable image. | christine.j Sat Apr 25, 2009 13:51 UTC Thank you for this interesting page. But it's sad to know that since you wrote this there has been yet another war and several bombings. |
