The staff on the desk were very nice, shame about the hotel. Having no hot water for 48 hours didn't exactly help but even leaving that aside, the rating has to be "Could do better". The location was good, easy walking distance to lots of places -but then so are most hotels in Beirut. The rooms were OK, a bit tired but a reasonable size and, once it came on again, there was plenty of hot water. Breakfast was very, very ordinary though they did seem to make more of an effort on our last day. I wouldn't stay here again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Unique Qualities: The best thing about the Grand was the pigeon shop across the road - walking in to buy a bottle of water (at 11pm) and being confronted by a wall of cages full of pigeons and what looked like the Mafia chapter of the Beyrouth Pigeon Fancier's Club was one of the more surreal experiences of our time in Beirut.

lynnehamman Fri Sep 11, 2009 01:44 UTC One can only hope that the restoration of this lovely city continues, and that the destruction of war never happens again. India has the same problem with old synagogues and almost zero Jewish population now. Its sad. | Nemorino Mon Aug 31, 2009 21:20 UTC Evocative tips on this beautiful but battered city! | Delia_Madalina Sun Jun 21, 2009 19:21 UTC Your pages about Lebanon and Beirut are enchanting and very helpful for my visit this summer. The marks of the July war must have changed the general architecture yet again. Raouche Rocks, an unforgettable image. | christine.j Sat Apr 25, 2009 13:51 UTC Thank you for this interesting page. But it's sad to know that since you wrote this there has been yet another war and several bombings. |
