Things To Do: Glass bottomed boats
  • Tip Rating:
  • If your time in Aqaba is limited, or you don't dive, an hour or so in a glass-bottomed boat will give you a chance to see some of the coral the Red Sea is famed for. The boats pull up on the beach near the Movenpick hotel, just go down and find the one you like the look of. The cost will depend on your bargaining powers and the number of customers in the offing.
Guidebooks tell you 30 minutes is enough, but an hour is probably better if you want to have a look around the harbour and get right down near the Israeli border.
You'll see a lot of coral, the seabed is totally covered with it, and drifting around on the dead calm sea is as relaxing a way to spend a hour as you could wish.

Things To Do: Have a look at the Palace!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you're out on that glass bottomed boat, don't forget to look at the Royal Palace. You won't see anything from the shore, but it's easy to pick it out from the sea from all the trees surrounding it.

The Royal Family used to gather here in November for King Hussein's birthday. Perhaps they still do.

    Things To Do: Evening walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful, balmy evenings are what you would expect in Aqaba, just right for a stroll before supper. Heading south along the waterfront will take you past the small fort, set among palm trees, and on to the little fishing harbour. Moored nearby, the boat that houses the Mina House Restaurant is a pleasant place to while away a couple of hours over dinner and a bottle of wine. Sitting out on deck at your table, with the water lapping and the lights of Eilat in the distance, goes someway to alleviating the slightly inflated prices - and you can be sure the fish is fresh!

Things To Do: Aqaba's public beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • With its palm trees, thatched sun shelters and small drink stands the public beach at Aqaba is quite pleasant, though you would do better to visit early in the day while the sand is still clean and women, particularly, would probably feel uncomfortable swimming here. Still, it's only a short walk from the centre of town and for an early morning walk, or as a place to catch up on your reading, it does fine. The view is good, the sand is fine, the sea is blue -and you're on holiday. Aqaba has that sort of feel about it.

For less public, cleaner swimming, you can check out the hotel beaches. They charge varying amounts. You can usually hire snorkelling gear too.

Things To Do: Fish and more fish
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Aquarium, officially known as the Marine Science Station, is a little way out of town along the coast to the south.

There's a video explaining the different kinds of fish, with a great collection of parrotfish, lionfish and a lot more.

There's also a display of stonefish which are poisonous, so you get an idea of just how hard it is to tell them from the stones!

Directions: About 10kms south, between the ferry port and the Royal Diving Club, taxi fare officially 3JD.

Careful, there's no other transport, so you might need to keep the taxi for the return trip

You have great Jordan pages. I'm trying to figure out if I should put Aqaba as the first stop on an upcoming 5 day trip to Jordan. I'm thinking no, regretfully.
