Getting TO/AROUND: There is now a bus station in Wadi Mousa, the village nearest to Petra. It's about 200 meters from the main street; go along the street in front of the mosque and keep straight on. The bus station is just below. All the buses start and leave from there now, although they are still willing to pick up in the main street where before they used to wait.

Transportation: Buses : from Amman to Petra

Getting TO/AROUND: Buses leave Amman for Petra from the south bus station - tell a taxi driver "al mujamma al janoob" (although probably "bus for Petra" would do just as well) They start at about 7am and continue throughout the day, one leaving when it's full or nearly so. The trip takes 3 hours and costs three and a half dinars. It will usually stop (but not always) at the half way point to allow anybody who wants to smoke to get out, and also of course to allow access to toilets. There's usually a small shop or cafe where you can get a drink, hot or cold.

Getting TO/AROUND: Buses for Amman leave from the bus station described above. The first bus leaves at about 6am, the second at about 7am and the third one at about 8am. After that they leave every two hours until 2pm which is the last one. However what really happens is that there are four or five buses there at each time. When one of them is full it leaves, and the next in the waiting list takes its place. So you can have three or four buses leaving Petra at (officially) 7am for instance. This is why there are so many buses waiting in Amman to come back again. The trip takes 3 hours and costs three and a half dinars. It will usually stop (but not always) at the half way point to allow anybody who wants to smoke to get out, and also of course to allow access to toilets. There's usually a small shop or cafe where you can get a drink, hot or cold. If you want to leave for Amman after 2pm, you can try to get to Ma'an - there are more buses to there from Petra or you can take a taxi for 8JD. From Ma'an buses leave for Amman quite late, up to about 6pm

Getting TO/AROUND: Buses leave Petra for Aqaba at 6.20am, at 8am and then not until 3.30pm (15H30 if you prefer) Be sure to be on time and preferably early, it might not wait for the right time if the driver is tired of waiting! The trip takes a bit over one and a half hours and costs 3JD.

Getting TO/AROUND: Buses start from Aqaba to Petra at about 7am. After that they are a bit uncertain, since this depends on how many buses have come from Petra - if one doesn't come because there weren't enough passengers, then obviously there are fewer to go back again. You can be pretty sure of the one at 9.30 am, there's another fairly reliable at 1pm and the last one at 3pm in the afternoon. It is entirely possible that there are others in between, go to the bus station and have a look! The fare is three dinars, and the trip takes a bit less than 2 hours. Posted by Lulu

Getting TO/AROUND: The bus from Petra to Wadi Rum is the only direct bus there from anywhere except Aqaba. It leaves in the morning somewhere around 6.30am, but since it will come to your hotel to pick you up, it might be there before this time. You have to reserve a place, ask your hotel to do this, so that the bus can collect you. The trip takes about an hour and a half and the fare is 3JD. Posted by Lulu

Getting TO/AROUND: The bus that arrives from Petra returns there at about 8.30am every day. This is the ONLY bus from Wadi Rum to Petra. It leaves normally from the Visitors' Centre about 6kms from Rum Village. However if you have visited the desert with a guide, he will normally call the bus driver who will often come to Rum Village to collect you. Otherwise the guide will take you to the Visitors' Centre. The trip takes about an hour and a half and the fare is 3JD. Posted by Lulu

Getting TO/AROUND: You really should ride a camel at some stage of your Jordanian holiday, and if Petra is the only time you get the chance, well go ahead and do it. You might as well end your visit with a few extra muscle aches after all the effort you've put in during the day. Actually, if you get yourself seated properly and relax into the motion of the beast, you'll be fine. The view from up there is terrific and someone will take a great photo of you and your ship of the desert to show the folk back home. leyle

Getting TO/AROUND: Petra is a huge and daunting site, and by the end of the day your feet may be protesting, They don't give out any awards for being a stoic, so if you 're tired and that little carriage looks inviting, hop on board. You'll bowl back through the siq in style, if not exactly comfort. You'll also be putting a little extra cash into the local economy - never a bad thing to do. These carriages are the only way of traversing the siq other than on foot, and for anyone who's a bit footsore, stiff, or just a bit tired, they are a blessing, worth the price - the current one of which will be posted in the visitor's centre.
