Wild Jordan: A Walk on the Wild Side
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Wild Jordan

Much favoured by smart young Ammanites, Wild Jordan is the cafe in the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature's headquarters. The building is quite stunning, with spectacular views over Amman. Modern, very trendy - this is as far from "traditional" as it could possibly be.

Special events include Jazz evenings and family breakfasts with activities for the kids.
There's an RSCN shop in the building and internet access, though this is fairly expensive .

Favorite Dish: The food's good, typical cafe fare with a Middle Eastern bent - hamburgers, sandwiches, salads, cappucinos, excellent fruit juices.

Hashem's: A historic site in Amman
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Hashem's

Starting at the lower price end, you really ought to try "Hashem" off an alley opposite to the Cliff Hotel. This qualifies as a historical site around here, they have been open for as long as Amman has been a city... You can sit at tables, get your tea from waiters circulating with trays. Very definitely down market, but just as definitely full of local colour! They are open 24 hours.

You can eat here and drink tea for less than 1 dinar!

Favorite Dish: They only serve fool and hommous, but there are several varieties of each. Cheap and cheerful are the words.

    The standard Arabic "fast food"

Fast Eats: A table with a view
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Fast Eats

The view is fabulous, the great curve of the Roman theatre rising above the green of the little park between it and the terrace where the restaurant (and others like it) stand. Shady awnings keep the sun at bay and the setback from the street is enough to keep the traffic noise and fumes well away too. All in all, a pleasant place to stop awhile over a snack and a drink before (or after) visiting the theatre and the little museums and the hippodrome beside it.

Favorite Dish: The most wonderful fruit juice cocktail - a huge mug of it - packed with flavour and no doubt enough vitamens to keep any cold at bay.
The selection of mezze and grilled chicken we shared was fine, and the service very friendly - what more do you want from a lunch stop when sight-seeing?

Haret Jdoudna: Madaba - Great food in a lovely courtyard
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Haret Jdoudna

A door in a stone wall leads into the courtyard garden of the Haret Jdoudna Restaurant in Madaba. Tables are set under big umbrellas, just perfect for a long, lazy lunch, and the choice of mezze on the menu is huge. Start with some cold ones, move on to hot dishes and then, if you have room, delicious grilled chicken and kebab. You can always take a break in between courses for a little shopping in the handicraft shop around the back.
It makes a pleasant break in the middle of your sightseeing, or you could easily stay in Madaba for dinner if you're driving yourself and heading back to Amman for the night. It's only 35km away.
There is a large indoor section of the resraurant should it be cold, but the garden is nicer.

Favorite Dish: They make very good labneh here, served with lots of fresh herbs - so refreshing. Kibbeh, fried haloumi, moutabal - all sorts of good things.
