Theme: Beach Activities
You'll find beautiful deserted beaches with the clearest of clear water along the Adriatic coast (photos 1) and others that are just concrete shelving like this one (photo 2) by the old harbour in Dubrovnik. With over 1700 kilometres of coastline stretching out around the mainland's deep bays and inlets and over 1000 islands of all shapes and sizes with a further 4000+ kilometres, there really is room for everyone, and some like it more crowded than others! Most natural beaches are stony - hard on the feet but it's one of the reasons the water is so clear. Some are absolutely spectacular - Bol, on the island of Brac, having the most famously beautiful of all, Zlatni Rat, a huge draw for tourists that sees thousands of people come there each year, though we've stayed in Bol in June and had the beach virtually to ourselves for our morning swims (photo 3). Others are naturally rocky shelves. (photo 4). Some are right on your doorstep - others are incredibly tucked away with no obvious access to them all - though if it's beautiful enough, you can bet someone will have found a way to get to it! (photo 5) If you see a beach marked FKK - be prepared for naked bodies - naturism's a big part of the Croatian beach scene and there are beaches up and down the country designated for nude swimming. Here's a great website that will tell you all you need to know, and then some, about this beachlover's paradise.

Trekki Sat Jul 18, 2009 08:55 UTC Oh, lovely updates since I've read it (almost 3 years ago..). I love your off path tips and would like to see the salt industry remains on the other side of Adriatic Sea. Haha, funny story about half of Freemantle's Croatian assembling at Makarska :-) | Redang Sun May 10, 2009 16:57 UTC Excellent page, I'll be there in less than 3 months! | Pawtuxet Thu Jan 29, 2009 13:15 UTC Croatia is looking more and more appealing as I read more pages and see those sumptious coastal towns, red tiled roofs, stucco buildings... lazy sunshine days.... | jumpingnorman Thu Dec 18, 2008 15:23 UTC I also like Saint Nicholas...and also St Therese and Bernadette...nice tip!
