City of contrasts

by TheWanderingCamel - last update: Sep 13, 2008

From the elegant boulevards and plazas of the smart end of town to the painted (and rusting, in the back streets) houses of La Boca, Buenos Aires is a city of enormous contrasts. Stay at the "top end" of town, among grand buildings, discreet apartment blocks and expensive shops and you could be excused for thinking you were somewhere in Europe. Make your way to other places, even the tourist -oriented areas of San Telmo and brilliantly painted La Boca and you begin to feel the pulse of a very different city. Take a trip across the wide La Plata to the little Uraguayan town of La Colonia and you really know you are in South America. A few days spent in Buenos Aires lets you experience all this and more. Fantastic art nouveau architecture, gorgeous shops, clouds of purple jacaranda blossoms, excellent wine and - everywhere - the langorous, unmistakeable strains of the tango - those were just some of the impressions gained from a few days spent in Buenos Aires the first time around but they well and truly whetted my appetite to see more of this fabulous city.

We finally made it back to MrL's favourite city, part of a fantastic trip around Argentina that saw us come and go from the city as we travelled from north to south before making our way to Mendoza in the west and moving on to Chile. This time, the stay was longer, time enough to begin to really get to grips with the city -
check out the sights -
and the tango dancers;
eat some great steaks - medialunas and empanadas too;
stroll down Florida -
and browse the stalls at San Telmo ....

It's taken a while to get around to writing this page. On arriving home I built pages about some of the other places we visited but hung back from Buenos Aires for some reason. There just seemed to be so much to be said, it's taken me this long to feel ready to come to grips with it. Let's start with the dance that defines the city. A young couple dancing the tango in Florida, the city's main shoping street, shoppers and a few tourists their audience - don't you love the assessing eye being cast over them by the young critic closest to them?
