Getting TO/AROUND: The first thing I did when I started to use the Metro system was to get one of the maps they have at the ticket counter. Hotel Richard gave me a fantastic map of Paris that had all of the metro stops on it, as well as all of the major and more minor sites. Despite my limited French I had no trouble buying tickets, using the Metro etc. Most stations have maps at their entrances/exits to help you find your way around the local area. Most of the time it's faster to use the ticket vending machines than to line up for the ticket counters. If you're going to do this, start collecting change. When I went in August 2005 a single trip (valid until you exit a station - ie you can make as many connections as you need to to get to your destination) cost E$1,40 for an adult. I have heard that packs of 10 tickets are available at a discounted rate.
