These and so much more sight sound and taste provide the charm which is Huangyao. Of course, the ancient granite stones that elected the walls and the buildings, paved the streets, craved into tombstones, guarded the emerald springs silently, watch us mortals continue on with our frivolous undertakings without judgment, waiting for the next baby to be born, the next cripple to return to dust. Powerful impression it left me, Huangyao.
Fellow VT pal
sugarpuff was there as well and she has some up close and personal encounters in the town itself. Check it out yourself.
Huangyao page The area of the old town and new town is quite small. Only a couple decent "inns" with limited Western accommodations are available. The food is strictly local fares…tofu soup, snakes, rodents, pork, fresh water fish, Guilin flat rice noodles, meat sticks. The old town itself is fantastic. Nothing has changed for hundreds of years. Usable water is either pumped from wells, or filtered through various granite pools for different usages, drinking, veggie cleaning, and laundry. A few RMB will get you a bamboo raft ride up and down the tributary that wraps itself in and around the old town of Huangyao.
Huangyao is not easily accessible. The roads arriving and leaving the town is under construction. We are talking about “red dust or mud” depending on weather condition. From Guilin it is a cool six hours plus drive.
