Underground Education

Coober Pedy is Aboriginal for "white man in a hole," aptly describing the booming opal mining industry and underground housing developments that are ubiquitous there. A small outback town of treasure hunters, Coober Pedy is subject to desert weather conditions - sand storms and temperatures soaring to 52 degrees Celcius. So people tend to have two houses, a winter home above ground, and a summer getaway right below it! Whole churches, stores, and hostels are built underground as well, making it a unique destination.

Count on the Aussies for a sense of humor in the middle of nowhere - Coober Pedy is the only town in the Red Centre with a decent golf course!
