Where are all the English? London is the capital of the United Kingdom, but it is also one of the most international of cities. a real melting pot of visitors and long standing communites from all over the world. This makes for curious experience for the traveller who often ask themselves 'where are the English?' It does often seem that most of the centre of London is run by people from other countries. In the hotels, bars, restaurants, transport system, shops, it is common to be see faces and hear accents that are not especially English. In fact, often the only English people a tourist is likely to meet is a taxi driver.
Sometimes London seems like a big theme park., it certainly has a lot of the same attractions. But that is only if you stick to the usual tourist trails in the centre, generally known as the West End. But London is a large city and its Outer boroughs are where most of the proper Londoners live, often commuting into the centre each day to work. A world away from the tourist trail, this a different London that is usually only seen by long term visitors and those who choose to make London their home.
London is my home and it took me a while to get the best out of it so I shall try to provide some tips for both the West End tourist and those travellers who will stay longer. |
