Venetian mirage

The "venetian" part of Split
Magnificent city of about 200.000, lying on a peninsula with the Adriatic in front and the dalmatian mountains behind, Split has two distinctive landmarks: Diocletian's Palace and the venetian style buildings of the old city that developped starting from Middle Age.
Having a walk through the streets of the old city you can easily think of being in Venice: the white limestone buildings are very similar to many buildings of Venice, and the lack of cars add realism to this feeling.
Exit Dioceltian's palace from the Iron Gate and access Narodni Trg (Poeple's square): from there you can start walking and exploring the old city, even without any guide and compass, just getting lost there and enjoying the atmosphere and the architecture.
Relatively new buildings inside Diocletian's palac
Split is not only buildings and history, but it's also sea! The magnificent Adriatic is in front of the city and some beautiful islands shelter the city from rough sea. A nice marina stands between Marjan mount and the Riva, the sea promenade of the city, where you can have a drink sitting at a terrasse cafe, or just walk with the roman walls of the Diocletian's palace on one side and the sea and the harbour on the other side
