Trieste is a weird city: not yet Italy, not at all Balkans, not anymore Austrian even if characters of the three cultures are all presents in its style and in its life. Not yet Southern Europe, not anymore Northern Europe, and anyway Trieste is the southernmost city among the northern cities!
A young writer born in Trieste, Mauro Covachich affirms that Trieste is a complex town, but with no contradictions, or, better, the real identity of Trieste goes through its contradictory nature. It could sound complicated, but if you just go there and try to know the city, you get to the point in a short while: Hapsburg heritage, melting pot, polyglottism, and a vast literary tradition (think of Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, James Joyce who lived and wrote in Trieste for many years).
Trieste was the main harbour of the Hapsburg empire where the Italian bourgeois could live in contact with Germans, Austrians, Slovenians, Croats, Greeks, all gathered there to make business |

| | Perfect scenario for moviemakers, walking through its streets you can easily forget where you are, and sometimes in which period are you living. From the medieval stones of San Giusto to the hi-tech of the AREA science park you can go through the centuries just by walking a bit! |
