Arriving in Tokyo after an uneventful flight from Minneapolis was a nice welcome indeed. Deposited my luggage at the Baggage storage for 500 yen per piece per day as I did not want to carry it to my hotel using the train as my transportation. Had no difficulty using the train ticket vending machine at Narita airport. Remember to change money first at the currency exchange on the 1st floor. Located my Ryokan easily but found my single room too small for my comfort. Had to change to a double room with bigger space and nice Japanese window but at a higher price. Hotel area abound with shops and temples and Japanese restaurants at reasonable prices. Toured Tokyo the next 3 days using the Tokyo Metro whcih I found very convenient. Be sure to buy a Day pass costing 700 yen (US$7) only. Was able to see Tokyo National museum, Ueno Park, Ginza, Tsukiji Fish market, Shinjuku, Shibuya, using the Metro. After a couple of days in Tokyo, was already longing to move out of this "monstrous" city and breathe fresh sea air. Took the train to Yokohama which I found interesting. It is just a short train ride from Tokyo and do not cost much. You can spend the whole day here easily and if you are lucky, you will be able to see Mt. Fuji on a clear day from the Landmark Tower building (US$10 entry fee). You can also while away time or rest your aching feet at the Yamashita Park, fronting the sea. Have dinner at Chinatown before heading back to Tokyo. One advise though : Try to avoid the maddening crowd in the subway during the rush hours in the morning and afternoon. It is just suffocating. |
