Now this is my kind of town.. If you’ve never had the opportunity to visit Asia before, you should consider going to Bangkok as your first Asian destination. Bangkok bridges the gap well for Western and Asian cultures, more so than any other city. Bangkok is a city made of up over 2X million and is deeply entrenched in both the old and new.
While there are other hotels who are rated higher for various reasons and by various people, we found the Sheraton Royal Orchid to be one of the finest hotels we have ever stayed at. Primarily because of the service. It is extremely rare today (especially in the USA.) for you to walk through a hotel lobby and have the staff welcome you by name and in the bar to know what you prefer to drink and bring it to you on your arrival. Add to this the gentleness of the Thai people and you find an environment where you are constantly being surprised by services which remind you of a bygone era. We stayed in a Jr suite overlooking the beautiful Chao Phraya river and we were served breakfast everyday in our room as one of the benefits of the room. There are few things in this world that beat having breakfast of omelets, bacon, freshly squeezed juice, and jams made of the most wonderful fruit while looking out the floor to ceiling windows from the 25th floor at the most incredible city and river. Also included were laundry service and access to the club room for drinks and h’or derves after 5:30PM. This was worth every cent we paid.
Even at 25 stories up, you can still hear the whistles of the boat tenders who are picking up and dropping off at the various piers. It is one of the best pleasures during the heat of the day to go out on a boat even if it is to just another pier further down the river. Nothing beats the unique experience of traveling by water. |
